This week marks the start of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League campaigns. Both teams are hoping for an urgent break from their poor Premier League performances.
Challenges of Manchester United
The work of Erik ten Hag With only seven points from their opening five games this season, Manchester United has had difficulty being consistent. Even with a busy summer transfer window, United hasn’t made much progress. Following victories over Southampton and Barnsley, they draw against Crystal Palace. Yet, the spotlight is on them for their Europa League start against Twente. After finishing in seventh place in the Premier League the previous season, any outcome other than victory could raise more questions about Ten Hag’s leadership.
Ten Hag, however, is upbeat and highlights the team’s development in spite of the recent outcomes. He thinks improved results will come from regular performances, but United needs to prove these ideas in Europe.
The Redemption of Tottenham
Following a difficult Premier League debut, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur is also looking safety in the Europa League. Following repeated defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal, Spurs defeated Brentford 3-1 to turn things around. Hoping to break their 17-year trophy drought, Postecoglou’s team will see the Europa League as a significant chance to save their season. On Thursday, they take against Qarabag, hoping to regain consistency and forward momentum.
